Sign of the Times

THE CLINT UPDATE:
On Tuesday, Mr. Carter told Beth that he had a lead on something…but he wasn’t going to tell her what it was because he didn’t want to get our hopes up if it turned out to be nothing. But he seemed to think it might be some news. He told her to call back on Wednesday, but she didn’t call until late in the afternoon. He was on his way out for the day, so they didn’t really talk. He said he was still waiting to hear more on this lead. He said, “There are still two more days left in this week.” We found this kind of odd…as though he really thought that something important was going to come to light this week. She called again yesterday (Thursday) around 1pm, but no one answered the phone. She tried again at 4pm, and Mr. Carter answered and said that he was with a client and couldn’t talk at the moment. He told her that he may have found out something that we were going to be really happy about, and he told her to call back first thing in the morning. First thing? What is so important that she has to call back first thing, we wondered? He’s never said anything like that before. We speculated: what if one of Clint’s friends or Clint himself was the “client” Mr. Carter was talking to? Mr. Carter wouldn’t be able to say anything to her then. And if Clint knew that he was on the phone with Beth, he very well might have told Mr. Carter not to tell Beth that he was there. If I were Clint, in those first few moments of receiving the letter, I would want to wait. To take the letter home to think about it. I wouldn’t want to be put on the phone immediately with this mysterious girl’s best friend. What would I say? So, what did he have to tell her first thing this morning? That Clint was there? That Clint’s friend was there? That Clint had called and said he was coming in? That Mr. Carter had actually spoken to Clint or someone close to him? These questions remain unanswered…
